Could You Really “Do What You Love” These Days?

I have always loved music. I received music awards in high school. So it’s not a surprise that I started college as a music major. It was a mercifully short experiment. As I like to say, I majored in music until I discovered that there was an uncertainty generating money in the future for a job by majoring in the field of music. Simply  “doing what I loved” would have been a poor career advice for me. And yet, it is advice I have always followed. Is doing what you love a ridiculous concept in this economy?

It seems to me now to “do what you love” is one of the worst pieces of career advice ever. Today’s economy, coupled with endless media coverage about the best-paying jobs  and the need to pursue a “practical” education,  seems to give lie to this classic career advice.

So where did this controversial advice begin? Like its companion philosophy, Follow Your Bliss...the philosophy of “do what you love” has been around for centuries, dating back to early spiritual texts. And also just putting down the book Do What You Love and the Money Will Follow has some responsibility for promoting the much heralded phrase.

Unfortunately most job seekers haven’t read her book, and the phrase has been turned into a bumper sticker, devoid of meaning and potentially dangerous in its simplicity. It reminds me of another common piece of advice, “Leap and the net will appear.” Yes, sometimes it does. And sometimes you just crash.

In the introduction to this book I was reading lately it isn’t suggesting in any way that doing what one loves means doing what one feels like doing. She describes people who are still waiting for the money to follow: an actress who has yet to catch her break; students enrolled in “tedious, often boring” graduate studies they hope will propel them to what they love; a painter who, knowing it will take years to master her craft, works at a day job and paints on weekends.

I am reminded of a quote from one of my favorite movies, The Peaceful Warrior  “A warrior does not give up what she loves. She finds the love in what she does. There are compromises and creative solutions along the path to doing what we love to do. To find the love in what we do. Money doesn’t just “follow” we must do the work first, invest in ourselves, and gradually see the results of our efforts. Finding the love in what we do in all aspects of our lives might be the best way to move forward in today’s career path. It’s all about mindfulness.

Take a few minutes and ask yourself if you have found your right livelihood. Are you pursuing what you love? or have you found the love in what you do? Because it might be that doing a less-than-ideal job that puts food on your family’s table is one aspect of the love you can find in it. And then you can begin to seek openings for what else you can love. Even in this economy there are ways to incorporate what you love into what you do. Because the truth is you probably love many things. I know I do. Once music was off the table, I shaped my career around other loves. Psychology. Writing. Literature. Art. Teaching. Counseling. Films. and YOGA.

It seems that our right livelihood will evolve over the years, that is, in a mindful way. Do what you love can be the best or the worst career advice depending on your self-awareness and mindfulness..

Full Moon in Scorpio

Align with the natural cycles…Sun is in Taurus and our Full Moon TONIGHT is in mysterious Scorpio

Scorpio asks us to be willing to die – on every level except physically. To surrender our plans to a higher power, to release all that dishonours our values & to relinquish security that compromises our integrity & inner power. The archetypal energy evoked by full moon in Scorpio is that of the Goddess of death & rebirth. She who initiates through sex magic & blood mysteries. You may know her as Kali Ma in the Hindu religion or Lilith in the Hebraic tradition..

Goddess-Kali-gods-of-hinduism-33227362-601-750

The key to our transformation is within the inner realm, this full moon forms a trine which is in a harmonious aspect to the planet Neptune in its home sign of Pisces. The lunar trine asks of us to have the courage to pursue our dreams from the soul so our outer life and inner life are in complete alignment.

To match the power of the Goddess of death and rebirth one must find their own power source by reconnecting with the Earth Mother & feeling complete acceptance & unconditional love. Only when our roots are deep in union with the Mother can we choose love & growth over fear & contraction. Only then can one risk external rejection (the death of one’s ego) & be seen in their vulnerability (soul). For her role is to be the gatekeeper of Eden, stripping bare those who aren’t true of heart.

If you haven’t heard about how the Full Moon in Scorpio will be in a shade of Pink tonight, you have so much magic to look forward to. Spiritually, the Pink Moon always signifies rebirth and renewal. The color pink is a revitalizing dose of beauty and joy. It serves as a reminder that life is a set of ups and downs, a cycle of hibernation and reawakening. The flowers may go away for a while but they always return, more beautiful than they’ve ever been before. Their color is appreciated in a new light.

Remember, there is no higher power than truth. The light of truth will pierce the dark & heal it like a cancer that threatens to destroy the sacredness of creation.

Happy Full Moon!

Transcension – Overcome Lessons

No matter what the lesson is, transcension is the purpose to do something different than you have done in the past, in this lifetime and in others.

Rather than trying to change someone’s opinion of you, your lesson is to change your opinion of yourself, to stop limiting your life based on others’ opinions and perceptions and to acknowledge your divine worthiness in spite of whatever you have experienced in the past.
The moment you refuse to stay in a karmic cycle with someone, your lesson has been learned and when you re-purpose that energy you have achieved transcension that allows moving into a higher vibrational frequency (ascension) to occur. The next time someone says that ‘you are not good enough’ you can turn that energy around and re-purpose that affirmation,
statement to ‘I am good enough and divinely perfect’ you have overcome that lesson.

Woo Hoo- Shine on!

Kelsey Can

What does your journey call for? To be alive in this moment, in this time, is to be on the cusp of this energetic upgrade in the human experience. The appearance of the world around us may seem to reflect something other than an upgrade.

Today as I found my faith may be challenged and find it difficult to reconcile my spiritual beliefs after hearing a dear friend of mine who I grew up with in New York, Lisa, her daughter Kelsey passed away from AML Acute myeloid leukemia .

Cancer has touched so many of our lives, I’ve lost my mom, other family members, a dear friend, and now absolutely heart broken to hear the sad news about Kelsey.

We love you Lisa, Chris and family. The McNulty’s and the Berger family. We remember her for who she was; the most selfless and compassionate little girl, who had a radiant smile and a brave spirit that was loved by so many. She’ll be remembered for her bravery and strength, which was remarkable. She took everything cancer could throw at her and kept going while maintaining a positive perspective and an upbeat attitude every step of the way, because that’s who Kelsey Berger was.

Heaven received an angel yesterday 4/17/18

To read more about Kelsey Berger or in lieu of offering donations to the family, please note making a donation in Kelsey’s name to The Truth 365, Arms Wide Open Childhood Cancer Foundation or St.Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Heaven received angel Kelsey. Rest in peace 4/17/18

Bountiful, Blissful, Beautiful Sat Nam Fest

One of the most powerful archetypes that Yogi Bhajan shared in his lectures was the Ashtabhuja.

The Ashtabhuja is the archetype of woman as Goddess. She represents warmth, heat, energy and her body shines with a radiance like the glowing sun. She has ashta – eight, bhuja – arms.

In her seven hands she holds powerful symbols: a bow and arrow representing wisdom and awareness; the lotus which is a symbol of the feminine; a discus which is like a water wheel when it empties and spills forward creation; a scepter which when thrown is like a lightning bolt to dispel negativity or adversity; and a jar of the divine nectar of life. Her eighth hand holds a mala or prayer beads that give eight Siddhis or spiritual powers and nine Nidhis or treasures.

I was always intrigued by this Goddess of the Universe. She spoke to me and I felt her power every time I even spoke her name.

Let her be alive within each woman. That became my prayer. I knew Yogi Bhajan was asking each woman not to worship the Ashtabhuja, but to embody her.

My prayer on this day and forever is that as women we may embody this divine being throughout actions, words, and thoughts. And let these words of Yogi Bhajan resound in our hearts and spirit as he exalts our true power as a woman.
