Could You Really “Do What You Love” These Days?

I have always loved music. I received music awards in high school. So it’s not a surprise that I started college as a music major. It was a mercifully short experiment. As I like to say, I majored in music until I discovered that there was an uncertainty generating money in the future for a job by majoring in the field of music. Simply  “doing what I loved” would have been a poor career advice for me. And yet, it is advice I have always followed. Is doing what you love a ridiculous concept in this economy?

It seems to me now to “do what you love” is one of the worst pieces of career advice ever. Today’s economy, coupled with endless media coverage about the best-paying jobs  and the need to pursue a “practical” education,  seems to give lie to this classic career advice.

So where did this controversial advice begin? Like its companion philosophy, Follow Your Bliss...the philosophy of “do what you love” has been around for centuries, dating back to early spiritual texts. And also just putting down the book Do What You Love and the Money Will Follow has some responsibility for promoting the much heralded phrase.

Unfortunately most job seekers haven’t read her book, and the phrase has been turned into a bumper sticker, devoid of meaning and potentially dangerous in its simplicity. It reminds me of another common piece of advice, “Leap and the net will appear.” Yes, sometimes it does. And sometimes you just crash.

In the introduction to this book I was reading lately it isn’t suggesting in any way that doing what one loves means doing what one feels like doing. She describes people who are still waiting for the money to follow: an actress who has yet to catch her break; students enrolled in “tedious, often boring” graduate studies they hope will propel them to what they love; a painter who, knowing it will take years to master her craft, works at a day job and paints on weekends.

I am reminded of a quote from one of my favorite movies, The Peaceful Warrior  “A warrior does not give up what she loves. She finds the love in what she does. There are compromises and creative solutions along the path to doing what we love to do. To find the love in what we do. Money doesn’t just “follow” we must do the work first, invest in ourselves, and gradually see the results of our efforts. Finding the love in what we do in all aspects of our lives might be the best way to move forward in today’s career path. It’s all about mindfulness.

Take a few minutes and ask yourself if you have found your right livelihood. Are you pursuing what you love? or have you found the love in what you do? Because it might be that doing a less-than-ideal job that puts food on your family’s table is one aspect of the love you can find in it. And then you can begin to seek openings for what else you can love. Even in this economy there are ways to incorporate what you love into what you do. Because the truth is you probably love many things. I know I do. Once music was off the table, I shaped my career around other loves. Psychology. Writing. Literature. Art. Teaching. Counseling. Films. and YOGA.

It seems that our right livelihood will evolve over the years, that is, in a mindful way. Do what you love can be the best or the worst career advice depending on your self-awareness and mindfulness..

Intuitive Affirmation of the Day

Bountiful, Blissful, Beautiful Sat Nam Fest

One of the most powerful archetypes that Yogi Bhajan shared in his lectures was the Ashtabhuja.

The Ashtabhuja is the archetype of woman as Goddess. She represents warmth, heat, energy and her body shines with a radiance like the glowing sun. She has ashta – eight, bhuja – arms.

In her seven hands she holds powerful symbols: a bow and arrow representing wisdom and awareness; the lotus which is a symbol of the feminine; a discus which is like a water wheel when it empties and spills forward creation; a scepter which when thrown is like a lightning bolt to dispel negativity or adversity; and a jar of the divine nectar of life. Her eighth hand holds a mala or prayer beads that give eight Siddhis or spiritual powers and nine Nidhis or treasures.

I was always intrigued by this Goddess of the Universe. She spoke to me and I felt her power every time I even spoke her name.

Let her be alive within each woman. That became my prayer. I knew Yogi Bhajan was asking each woman not to worship the Ashtabhuja, but to embody her.

My prayer on this day and forever is that as women we may embody this divine being throughout actions, words, and thoughts. And let these words of Yogi Bhajan resound in our hearts and spirit as he exalts our true power as a woman.

Flexible Spine Equals Flexible Mind

One of the most basic goals of Kundalini Yoga is to take care of the spine. Spinal flex offers a series of exercises (a kriya) to activate, align and loosen up the spine.

Lower back pain and upper back stress are some of the most common health complaints of adults. The best way to avoid backaches is to take care of your spine on a daily basis. There are no quick fixes for back pain, but spinal flexes is an effective maintenance program.

How to Do It:

Sit in easy pose. Grab the ankles. As you inhale powerfully, flex the spine forward, keeping the shoulders relaxed and the head straight. Do not move the head up and down. Exhale and relax the spine back. Continue rhythmically with deep breaths. As you inhale feel the energy go down the spine. As you exhale feel it come back up to the third eye. Mentally bring SAT down and NAM back up the spine.

Laws of the Universe

Thinking back on when my life

was a mess, I would blame the Universe. Over and over I would say, “Why me? What have I done to deserve this? It’s unfair. Why does this happen to me all the time?”

Then I read THE SECRET. The Secret introduced me to the Law of Attraction and I believed that this was how I could get the Universe to work for me rather than against me. I didn’t know much about the Law of Attraction. I didn’t really understand how it worked or how it was connected to the Universe. I thought the Universe was a space where if I sent out positive thoughts I would get positive results.

During the time of reading the Secret I lost my job, my car, my home, and my ex-husband at the time. I was devastated and I felt I was a failure. I gave up reading the Secret or thinking about the Law of Attraction. Its funny though, when you feel your life is at rock bottom and you come to a point where you have a choice – do I continue on with this downward spiral or do I try and figure a way out of this?

The easier option is to do nothing but I chose to try and figure a way out. I decided to put the Law of Attraction and the teachings of the Secret to the test. I set out to manifest my perfect job according to how I thought it should be done. I did find a job eventually but I took the job for all the wrong reasons. I knew this job was not for me the moment I went into the interview. I did not listen to my intuition. I had made a deal with the Universe to using the 3 step formula (ask, believe, and receive) from the Secret to manifest this perfect job into my life. This was the first job offer so this must be the one and I took it.

Three months later I quit the job. I found myself again, feeling like a failure, zero self-esteem, zero confidence and very little self-belief. Again I had to pull myself out of this deep hole and start over.

The question I asked myself was; “How could I get the Universe to listen and work for me rather than against me?”

I discovered that my relationship with the Universe now operates on these four laws – action, consequence, positive energy and the power of choice.

When you start working with the universal laws that resonate with you. You will find overtime that the Universe will respond and start working with you to achieve all that you desire in life. I began to see why some people including me never achieved positive results because the conscious thoughts which are positive are not aligned to the unconscious beliefs, habits and values. When you are not aligned in your mind, body and soul although your conscious mind desires greatness your subconscious will block it.
Once I understood how to work with the different energies that are the essential elements of setting and achieving goals I felt more confident about my abilities and myself. I also found that I began to have more positive experiences in my life and my relationship with the Universe improved. Over time I stopped bargaining with the Universe and became more open to receiving from the universe.

Events can happen in our lives that are traumatic and painful. It is times like these that it becomes very hard to be positive and upbeat about life especially when you feel so bad. There are also times in our life where we just feel sad or frustrated. I was spending too much time focusing on having to be positive and feeling good that I was not dealing with my feelings of sadness, grief, pain and fear.

I do agree that maintaining a positive attitude and outlook about life is powerful and you do have more energy and happiness in life. However ignoring your feelings of pain or sadness only results in you burying these feelings deep within you. These feelings are real. They will not stay buried for long and at some point they will surface.

It’s a fine balance to manage and process these feelings and not get drawn into the vortex of negativity. From my experience I’ve learned and like to share is that you spend time acknowledging your feelings but then move quickly to finding more positive things to focus on in your life. I found that by dealing with my feelings of sadness, pain and grief I became more self aware and more resilient. As a result my thoughts and energies were more aligned and my relationship with the Universe became stronger.

To the Universe, k:)
